Inspiring Japanese life philosophy

Have you ever heard someone mysteriously say the phrase “Ichigo Ichie”? It's not a magic formula, but it's just like one. These Japanese words can be translated as “once, encounter” or “at this moment, occasion.” We can also see a similarity with the famous phrase “Pick the roses of life today” by Pierre de Ronsard.

A doctrine that invites you to savor every moment

Ichigo Ichie is a Japanese philosophy of life that borrows from ancient wisdom and the practice of meditation. As in the Nordic countries, this state of mind is receiving increasing attention in Europe. It was introduced a year ago in the West by the Spaniards Hector García and Francisco Miralles, authors of the book “Make every moment the best of your life.”

The principle of ichigo ichie is to enjoy the small pleasures that life offers us in every moment. We must start from the principle that every moment is unique and will not be repeated. When we accept this premise, we are better able to step out of our thoughts and focus on the present. In fact, we cannot change the past and we cannot know what the future holds. Based on this observation, Ichigo Ichi invites us to refocus on the moment we are experiencing at this moment and enjoy every minute.

How to apply Ichigo Ichi daily?

Here's the best way to use this principle in your life.

Take the time to appreciate every moment

Mindfulness, well known to those who practice meditation, is the primary focus of ichigo ichie. This involves savoring each moment as you would a glass of good wine: enjoying all its aroma, without drinking it in a hurry. Concretely, you can experience mindfulness at any time of the day. Step away from your electronic devices and take a quiet moment for yourself, without thinking about what you will do next or your day. Observe what you feel, the rhythm of your breathing, and the sensations your five senses give you…

Practice gratitude

Ichigo Ichie invites us to be grateful for life's small pleasures. A ray of sunshine caressing your cheek, a purring cat, a smile exchanged on the subway, a good cup of hot coffee… Maybe you are accustomed to these interactions and no longer enjoy them as much as you should. Refocusing on the present moment helps us feel grateful for these precious moments and realize how lucky we are to experience them. Practicing gratitude helps you be more positive, calmer and, in short, happier.

Enjoy your loved ones

The Japanese enjoy spending quality time with loved ones, such as during the tea ceremony ritual, which is still practiced today. Emulate them by making time each week for your loved ones, even (and especially) if your schedule is busy. Show your wife, family and friends how important they are to you. In addition, Ichigo Ichie invites you to show tenderness and compassion to those around you. Whether you're talking to people you know well or have just met, be open and listen to your interlocutor gently, without judging them.

Show curiosity

Is your life not providing the desired satisfaction? Nothing prevents you from changing what you don't like. We've seen it: Ichigo Ichi does not advise dwelling on the past or excessive planning for the future. On the other hand, you can invest in the present moment and decide now what can benefit you. In general, change is often positive and it is important to leave doors open. Be curious every day, and let yourself be drawn to new callings or activities, without fear and without hasty judgment.

I wish you to feel more inner peace and happiness with Ichigo Ichi!
